SITUATIONS · 4 SIGNALS

When a business needs a new online store

A conversation about a store usually starts with one of four situations. Each has a different solution.

01|SIGNAL · CHANNEL

You sell only on marketplaces

You pay a commission on every sale on Galaxus or Ricardo, and the customer relationship stays on the platform. Your own store builds your customer base and lowers the cost of repeat orders. What the same product costs in both channels, we work out in the article Selling on Galaxus and Ricardo — fees and integration.

02|SIGNAL · SCALE

Your store has outgrown a ready-made platform

You are missing a price list for regular customers, an extra checkout step or a connection that no app in the platform's store provides. Every workaround costs you hours of work each week.

03|SIGNAL · MANUAL WORK

You retype orders by hand

You move orders, stock levels and invoices between the store, the accounting software and the carrier. At 30 orders a day and 3 minutes each, that is 90 minutes a day, or about 30 hours a month (20 working days). This is an example calculation — plug in your own numbers.

04|SIGNAL · TECHNOLOGY

Your store is slow on phones or runs on an old version

PrestaShop 1.7 and 8 run on PHP versions without security support. In the HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2025, only 50% of PrestaShop sites passed all three Core Web Vitals on mobile (global data, July 2025). We describe the speed thresholds in the article Core Web Vitals for ecommerce.

↳ Each situation has a different solution, and sometimes the best one is the cheapest. That is why we start by choosing the platform, not the graphic design.

OPTIONS · 4 ROUTES · PRICES EXCL. VAT

Four routes to an online store — choose by how you sell

Prices excl. VAT; Swiss VAT is added on top. The "from" amount is the smallest scope in the calculator — up to 100 products and a ready-made theme. Payments, shipping and integrations raise the amount, and the calculator below shows yours.

A · FIRST OWN STORE

Starting out or moving off a marketplace

from CHF 9,000
excl. VAT · with payments and shipping CHF 9,750
5–10 wks
typical time

For whom: a first store, a standard checkout, selling in Switzerland.

Recommendation: Shopify. Server, updates and security are in the subscription, so the start is the shortest.

What we do: plan selection, a theme matched to your brand, payments, delivery, product import and redirects from old URLs.

Fixed cost: the Basic plan at CHF 21 a month billed annually, CHF 29 billed monthly (Shopify pricing).

B · A STORE THAT GROWS

Large catalog, variants, marketplaces and accounting

from CHF 7,500
excl. VAT · PrestaShop, with payments and shipping CHF 9,750
6–12 wks
typical time

For whom: from 100 to over 2,000 products, variants, Galaxus or Ricardo, a multichannel order tool, accounting software.

Recommendation: PrestaShop — catalog and variants as standard, code and data on your server. Already have a WordPress site, or want to stay in its admin panel? Then WooCommerce, from CHF 5,000 excl. VAT.

What we do: deployment on your server, theme, payment and delivery modules, integrations, data import, server tuning.

Fixed cost: hosting, paid modules and support.

C · SELLING OUTSIDE SWITZERLAND

Several currencies, languages and countries

from CHF 9,000
excl. VAT · with payments and shipping CHF 9,750
5–10 wks
typical time

For whom: a Swiss brand that sells directly to customers in the EU and other countries.

Recommendation: Shopify. Languages, taxes and — with Shopify Payments — local currencies come as standard. 76% of Shopify sites pass all three Core Web Vitals on mobile (Web Almanac 2025, global data).

What we do: theme, payments, carriers for cross-border parcels, a plan for who pays customs duties and import VAT (you or the customer), connection to your accounting software, product migration.

Fixed cost: the Basic plan from CHF 21 a month billed annually, plus 2% of sales when payments go through an external gateway instead of Shopify Payments (Shopify pricing).

D · CUSTOM STORE AND B2B

Your own pricing rules, customer price lists, ERP

from CHF 7,500
excl. VAT · B2B module +CHF 12,500 · a typical B2B platform about CHF 40,000
8–16 wks
typical time · B2B platform 6–9 months

For whom: your own pricing rules, price lists for wholesale customers, an ERP that decides stock and prices, selling in several channels.

Recommendation: custom code — Next.js and Payload CMS. We write the order logic around your process, and the panel for running the store comes with it.

What we do: store design and code, admin panel, payments, API integrations, deployment and monitoring.

Fixed cost: server and code support. No subscription and no commission to a platform provider.

↳ Not sure which option fits? The table below shows the thresholds we use to choose a platform. The quote you get before signing the contract is binding.

How we choose the platform — situation, recommendation and threshold

We choose the platform based on five questions: how many products and variants you have, what the store must connect to, where you sell, who will maintain it and how much it may cost over 3 years. We apply the thresholds below on the first call.

Your situation

Recommendation

Why

Up to about 500 products, a standard checkout, selling in Switzerland

Shopify

The shortest start (5–10 weeks), hosting and updates in the subscription

Over 1,000 products with variants, several integrations, your own server

PrestaShop

Catalog and variants as standard, code on your server. The server needs tuning: on your own hosting, response time depends on it, not on the platform

You have a WordPress site or want to stay in its admin panel

WooCommerce

Store and content in one panel. The cheapest of our builds on your own server (from CHF 5,000 excl. VAT)

Selling into the EU and other countries

Shopify (with Markets)

Currencies and languages as standard; 76% of Shopify sites pass Core Web Vitals (Web Almanac 2025, global)

Customer price lists, the ERP decides stock and prices

Custom code (Next.js + Payload)

Logic no ready-made app provides. From CHF 7,500 excl. VAT, a B2B platform about CHF 40,000

Budget under CHF 7,500, testing a product

Start on a hosted platform on your own

A free trial is enough to test demand

On the call we work out the cost over 3 years, not just the build. Shopify Basic billed monthly is CHF 29 a month, i.e. CHF 348 a year and CHF 1,044 over 3 years — before the 2% fee on sales through an external payment gateway, paid apps and support.

Work it out yourself: the e-commerce TCO calculator compares the yearly cost of platforms, and the quiz: which e-commerce platform gives you a pointer in a few minutes. We compare platform price lists and exit terms in the article E-commerce platform comparison.

INCLUDED · 4 SPECIFICS

What you get with every build — 4 specifics, not extras

These four things are included in every option, from a Shopify store to a B2B platform.

01|PLATFORM CHOICE

3-year cost, in writing before the contract

Subscription, payment fees, hosting, paid plugins and support in one table. You compare platforms on the same numbers before you sign anything.

02|OWNERSHIP

Code after every project stage

With PrestaShop, WooCommerce and custom code you have a Git repository from the first week, and we hand over the code after every stage together with access to the test version. On Shopify we set up the account, data and domain in your name.

03|TECHNICAL SEO

Redirects and product data for Google

When you change platforms, we list every URL and set up 301 redirects. After launch we submit the sitemap in Search Console. Product pages get structured data with price and availability.

04|SIGN-OFF AND STABILIZATION

Measurement before handover and 30 days of stabilization

Before launch we record, with a date, the load time (LCP) and layout stability (CLS) of the product and category pages. For 30 days after launch we fix bugs within the build price.

PROCESS · 6 STAGES · CODE AFTER EACH·6 steps

How ecommerce development works — 6 stages, each with code to sign off

Stage durations apply to a PrestaShop or WooCommerce store. Each stage ends with something you sign off before we move on.

    • A dated LCP and CLS measurement

Payment in stages: 30% at the start, 40% after design approval, 30% at store launch. For projects over CHF 10,000 excl. VAT we split payment into 4–5 installments.

How much does ecommerce development cost — three example bills

A build costs from CHF 7,500 excl. VAT on PrestaShop and custom code and from CHF 9,000 on Shopify; if you already run WordPress, WooCommerce starts at CHF 5,000. Swiss VAT is added on top. These are the same amounts the calculator below uses. Three typical bills:

01

First store on Shopify

Build: CHF 9,000 · payments: CHF 250 · shipping: CHF 500. Time: 5–10 weeks.

Plus the Shopify subscription: Basic is CHF 21 a month billed annually, i.e. CHF 252 a year, or CHF 29 billed monthly. With an external payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, add 2% of sales (Shopify price list, 10.2026).

Total: CHF 9,750 excl. VAT
02

A growing PrestaShop store with a marketplace

Build: CHF 7,500 · up to 1,000 products: CHF 1,500 · payments: CHF 1,000 · shipping: CHF 1,250 · marketplace (Galaxus or Ricardo): CHF 4,000. Time: 11–18 weeks.

The same scope on WooCommerce: CHF 12,750 excl. VAT.

Total: CHF 15,250 excl. VAT
03

A B2B platform on custom code

Build: CHF 7,500 · over 1,000 products: CHF 5,000 · custom graphic design: CHF 6,000 · payments: CHF 1,750 · shipping: CHF 2,000 · ERP: CHF 6,000 · B2B module: CHF 12,500. Time: 25–40 weeks.

Total: CHF 40,750 excl. VAT

What raises the price: the number of products (+CHF 1,500 up to 1,000 products, +CHF 5,000 above), a custom graphic design (+CHF 6,000, an extended UX design +CHF 12,500), ERP (+CHF 6,000), a marketplace such as Galaxus or Ricardo (+CHF 4,000), rush delivery (+40% on price, −30% on time).

What you pay separately: the subscription or hosting, payment provider fees, paid plugins, product descriptions and photos. You can add descriptions and photos in the calculator as options. We set out the full bill of fixed costs in the article Ecommerce website cost.

We do not quote a Swiss market median here: our 2026 price report covers Polish quotes only, and converting them to francs would not give you a Swiss price.

RISKS · 4 PROBLEMS AND REMEDIES

What most often goes wrong with a store — and how we take it off the table

You see how a store looks straight away. You see integrations, Google traffic and fixed costs only with the first orders and bills.

RISK · INTEGRATIONS

Integrations that fail after launch

We check every connection before the quote, not during the build. We agree which system is the source of prices, stock and invoices. Before launch we test them on trial orders — from cart to invoice and shipping label.

RISK · GOOGLE TRAFFIC

A traffic drop after changing platforms

A URL map, 301 redirects kept for at least a year and a new sitemap in Search Console. Rankings may fluctuate before re-indexing, and the plan limits that. More in the article Ecommerce migration SEO and in the migration checklist.

RISK · FIXED COSTS

Fixed costs higher than the build

You get the 3-year cost in writing before the contract. For example, Shopify Grow is CHF 708 a year billed annually (CHF 59 a month) plus 1% of sales with an external payment gateway.

RISK · DEPENDENCE

Lock-in to the contractor

Code after every stage, documentation and access set up in your name. Copyright passes to you on payment. You can end post-launch support with the notice period written into the contract.

NOT FOR WHOM

When we will recommend a different solution

In these three situations we will say so on the first call and point you to a better route.

A budget under CHF 7,500 or a product test

Start on your own on a hosted platform during its free trial. We describe how in the articles How to start an online store and Free online store.

You sell only on Galaxus or Ricardo, and that is enough for you

Your own store means a separate cost calculation and separate work on traffic. First work out how much you leave in commissions — the article Selling on Galaxus and Ricardo.

A corporate rollout with SAP or Oracle

For companies with over 1,000 employees and a corporate-scale budget, a large implementation firm with a team built for that scale is a better fit.

FAQ

Questions about ecommerce development

Ten questions we hear most often before a business decides on a store.

A build costs from CHF 7,500 excl. VAT on PrestaShop and custom code and from CHF 9,000 on Shopify; if you already run WordPress, WooCommerce starts at CHF 5,000. Swiss VAT is added on top. A Shopify store with payments and shipping is CHF 9,750 excl. VAT.

On top of that come fixed costs: the subscription or hosting, fees and support. We set them out in the article Ecommerce website cost.

Shopify 5–10 weeks, PrestaShop and WooCommerce 6–12 weeks, custom code 8–16 weeks, a B2B platform 6–9 months. We count the time from signing the contract to launch. The time is extended mainly by integrations and importing a large catalog. You get a dated schedule before the contract.

A first store with a standard checkout — Shopify. A large catalog with variants — PrestaShop. Already on WordPress — WooCommerce. Selling into the EU and beyond — Shopify with Markets. Customer price lists and ERP — custom code. You will find the thresholds in the platform selection table.

For a quick pointer, try the quiz: which e-commerce platform.

Included: platform choice with the 3-year cost, design of the key views, payments and delivery as quoted, product import, 301 redirects, order testing, admin panel training and 30 days of stabilization.

Separately: the subscription or hosting, payment provider fees, paid plugins, product descriptions and photos.

We hand over the code after every project stage, and copyright passes to you on payment. With PrestaShop, WooCommerce and custom code you have the repository, the database and server access. On Shopify the platform code belongs to its provider — the account, data and domain are yours, and you take your data out by export.

Yes, that is part of the project. ERP costs from CHF 6,000 excl. VAT, a marketplace from CHF 4,000, shipping from CHF 500 to CHF 2,000 depending on the platform. Before the quote we check whether your system has an available API. Full list in the Integrations section, and details in the article ERP for ecommerce.

We migrate the store following a plan: a URL inventory, 301 redirects kept for at least a year, data export, testing and a new sitemap in Search Console. Rankings may fluctuate before Google re-indexes the new URLs, and the plan limits those fluctuations. We describe it step by step in the article Ecommerce migration SEO.

For 30 days we fix bugs within the build price. Then you choose a support subscription (updates, backups, monitoring, small changes), paying per task, or running the store yourself. On Shopify the server and updates are in the platform subscription. Work out the cost of support in the maintenance cost calculator.

Packages on a ready-made theme cost far less and can be enough to test an idea. With us you also get a platform chosen for its 3-year cost, integrations priced before the start, code after every stage and a redirect plan. When you compare offers, check whether they cover these four things.

You have the code, documentation and access, so a new contractor takes over the store without us. The support subscription has a notice period written into the contract. At handover we prepare a list of access credentials and a short description of the integrations.
